4 czerwca - 25 rocznica pierwszych wolnych wyborów w Polsce!
Wybory parlamentarne w Polsce w 1989 r. przeprowadzone zostały w wyniku porozumienia zawartego pomiędzy władzą komunistyczną a przedstawicielami części opozycji i Kościoła podczas obrad Okrągłego Stołu. Rozmowy prowadzone były tego samego roku od 6 lutego do 5 kwietnia. Dzięki tym negocjacjom ustalono zasady organizacji wyborów czerwcowych.
Były to pierwsze częściowo wolne wybory w historii naszego kraju po II Wojnie Światowej. Odbyły się w dniach 4 i 18 czerwca 1989 r. Dzięki nim Polska stała się pierwszym państwem bloku wschodniego, w którym wyłonieni w wyborach przedstawiciele społeczeństwa uzyskali realny wpływ na sprawowanie władzy. Podczas wyborów kontraktowych (czerwcowych) wybrano 460 posłów na Sejm PRL oraz 100 senatorów do nowo utworzonego Senatu PRL.
Przedstawiciele niedemokratycznych władz komunistycznych Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej zagwarantowali rządzącej „koalicji”, obejmującej PZPR i jej satelitów, obsadę co najmniej 299 (65%) miejsc w Sejmie. Pozostałe mandaty poselskie w liczbie 161 (35%) zostały przeznaczone dla kandydatów bezpartyjnych. Walka o te miejsca oraz walka o wszystkie mandaty senatorskie (100) miała charakter otwarty i demokratyczny. Do ubiegania się o nie dopuszczeni zostali również przedstawiciele różnych środowisk opozycji demokratycznej, ale jednocześnie o te mandaty konkurowali także kandydaci jawnie wspierani lub nieformalnie popierani przez obóz władzy, reprezentanci różnych organizacji społecznych i zawodowych oraz osoby niezależne. Wybory te zakończyły się zdecydowanym zwycięstwem opozycji solidarnościowej. Obóz PRL - owskiej władzy poniósł porażkę, gdy przegrali niemal wszyscy kandydaci z tzw. listy krajowej, obejmującej większość przywódców reżimu. Wybory te są uznawane za moment przełomowy dla procesu przemian politycznych w Polsce. Zapoczątkowały one zdecydowane przyspieszenie transformacji ustrojowej.
